WORKSHOPS: make jewelry instead of knitting

Attention all knitters, may we propose a new skill-set and tactile experience for spring??? Come learn a new fun skill at our workshops and make some cool jewelry for summer. Added bonus... you can continue making these pieces all summer long while hanging out at the beach, take it with you during your travels, or lounging by the pool. It's great for men/women/kids and does not require many tools and cost is dependent on the materials you choose. Make some great gifts to give when you visit friends this summer. I recently spotted a monk(?) making a long rosary(?) with square knots on the subway. We teach skills that you can work on anywhere, just keeping the hands busy.

We are introducing lots of a new time slot, 10am-noon, for busy moms or for a company break during the day. This is what I did myself when my kids were young, I started taking metalsmithing classes while my kids were in preschool during the day.

Wire wrapping is a new class that we will start and this will have a follow up workshop. We are looking forward to teaching this to a design class from Parsons this spring. Another FIT student mentioned that she would like to learn this since this skill is also not usually taught in professional jewelry schools which normally focuses more on production techniques.

We offer custom services at Lost Wax, from stone selection to fabrication. Or we can help you redesign a new piece with an existing stone. We specialize in rose cut diamonds for a modern but yet organic ancient jewelry feel to the ring.

The rose cut was developed during the late 1800's to maximize light from the stone in a period of gas lights and early electricity. It's a very organic look with many different facets cut into the top of the diamond and in no way looks like a brilliant cut calibrated stone, typical in most engagement rings with prong settings. Large gemstone rings seem to be gaining momentum as well as an alternative engagement ring, which seem to be another fun unexpected way to propose.

Since opening in October, everyone is very excited about the custom services/repair services we offer and we have worked on many projects. We have a large and diverse group of artisans that we work with comprising of all different jewelry techniques, so we can offer enameling, wax carving, and any other techniques. Read about Navina Haidar and her work for the past 8 years in creating the Islamic galleries at the Metropolitan Museum. It's a great compliment to me that she loves and wears my jewelry, as she is in this vogue shot. I am beyond flattered since she is surrounded by amazing and incredible objects everyday at the Met. The galleries are amazing, some of the work is so modern and relevant but were created so long ago.

The Met is a huge resource and inspiration for me, just to study the techniques and patterns and how everything in design is somehow linked to something from the past even without consciously aware, I am constantly finding new details in the same objects over the year. We think this service is hard to find in NYC, an accomplished artisan with an eye for design. For example, a client needed repair for an old pin that his mother had made fifty years ago, instead of a modern solder quick fix we suggested that it would be much nicer and in keeping with the design of the piece to have the repair hand done.

Dries Van Noten continues to be a huge inspiration to me for the past 20 years. Everything he designs is so relevant, which is not  easy as a label matures. I think his success is due to his work being very personal and inward-looking, meaning his vision is so authentic and consistent with his personal interests and obsessions, therefore his work never seems dated. A creative person is always learning and developing new interests as the eye is consistently registering new details to think about and discover. 

Images above are from his most recent runway show where the decorative painters are at work during the show...brilliant!!! Another amazing show was the dinner table as runways to celebrate his 20th anniversary, I believe. Nothing is contrived, just authentic style and a whimsical independent vision. I'm amazed at his continued talent to amaze us season after season with his unique and incredible sense of style.

Bright and neon colors have been a big trend and will continue this spring/summer. One way to explore colors is through wearing prints which I find much more complementary than wearing one super bright color. Check out the runways of Burberry Prorsum, Marni, and Dries Van Noten and their use and exploration of African wax prints.
My favorite way to wear prints? Pair it with grey sweatshirt or tshirt on top and balance it with some amazing colorful beads. I think this looks great for men and women, add some fun to your real life style!!!

NYC: NY Public Library/Bryant Park area mini tour

I am running around the city most days and friends are always asking for interesting things to do so I thought I'd share these mini city tours of places I try to stop in when I'm in these neighborhoods.

The NYPL main library's facade has recently been cleaned and is a great starting point in this area. Stop in and have a look around at the historical rooms seen in many old films and there's always an interesting exhibit on display. It's just a fun quick stop no need to spend hours there, I like to take these mini breaks during the day just to be inspired by something interesting/beautiful. I get lunch at CAFE ZAIYA on 41st street, a Japanese bakery that also sells a huge variety of Japanese style bento box prepared lunches that you can take to Bryant Park or eat onsite. And a must stop is KINOKINUYA, on 6th ave across from the library, has an amazing selection of art books, craft books, and fun Japanese stationery.

I am excited to show a small selection of Bruce Hanke's work, a New England painter and friend, at our studio shop for the holidays. My favorites are the still lifes of vintage toys.

Bruce is a realist painter whose training began at Pratt Institute in New York City. A native New Englander, he currently resides in Norfolk, Connecticut. His paintings are shown in galleries in New York, London, Connecticut and Massachusetts and are in private collections internationally.

Bruce’s work has won inclusion in national and international juried competitions such as The 2010 BP Portrait Award Exhibition at The National Portrait Gallery, London, England and The 18th Annual SA, Emerging Artists 2010 and The American Artists Professional League Grand National Exhibition in New York City. Works have also been published on The National Portrait Gallery’s web-site, BP Portrait Awards 2010 Catalogue, Direct Art Magazine and Artists Magazine.
